Defending champ Stosur wins in US Open 3rd round

NEW YORK (AP) ? Defending champion Sam Stosur was pushed for the first time in this year's U.S. Open by American Varvara Lepchenko, but dominated the second set after winning the first in a tiebreaker.

The seventh-seeded Stosur won 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Friday in the third round. She had dropped just five games through her first two matches.

It was still a successful Open for the 31st-seeded Lepchenko. After reaching at least the third round in three straight Grand Slam events, she'll likely climb into the top 30 in the rankings.

Friday could be farewell for 2003 champion Andy Roddick. A day earlier, he announced this would be the final tournament of his career.

The American is set to face Bernard Tomic at night in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Consumer sentiment hits three-month high

By NBC News wire reports

Consumer sentiment climbed to a three-month high in August as households made progress paying down debt, but future expectations remained grim, a survey on Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on overall consumer sentiment this month rose to 74.3, its highest since May and above economists' expectations of 73.6. In July, the number stood at 72.3.

Buying was bolstered by price discounts and low interest rates, the survey found. But the biggest source of optimism was tied to success in trimming debt.

"Rather than citing income changes, consumers were more likely to cite favorable shifts in the amount of their outstanding debt and the value of their assets," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement.

The survey's barometer of current economic conditions rose to 88.7 from 82.7, the highest since January of 2008.

However, the survey's gauge of consumer expectations fell to 65.1 from 65.6, the lowest level since December of 2011.

Half of those surveyed said their financial situation was worse than it was five years ago and the majority anticipated no wage gains during the year ahead, the survey showed.

The one-year inflation expectation rose to 3.6 percent from 3 percent in July, while the survey's five-to-10-year inflation outlook was at 3 percent, compared with 2.7 percent last month.

Reuters contributed to this report.?

Seniors Can Benefit From a Little Extra Help | In Home Senior Care

by Reed on August 31, 2012

Q.?? My 82-year-old mother-in-law still lives alone and does quite well. However she really needs some help with her house and errands. She once owned a business and is still so independent. She loves company, but gets really upset when we family members try to help. What can we do?

Many seniors like your mother-in-law are in a transition situation. They are still able to do much for themselves, but they need a little extra help to remain at home and independent. And for those seniors, particularly individuals who have been independent all of their lives, accepting help can be an uncomfortable change. The??Home Instead Senior Care??office sees many seniors who are resistant to help, either from their family members or professional caregivers. Some view accepting help as the first step to becoming dependent on others.

Senior-WomanIt?s obvious your mother-in-law is accustomed to doing things for herself. And if she?s like most seniors, she fears being unable to stay at home. Nearly 90 percent of seniors surveyed in a Home Instead Senior Care poll said they are very or somewhat likely to remain at home.

First, don?t try to force your mother-in-law into accepting help, either from you and other family members or anyone else. Instead, gently remind her that you?re looking out only for her best interests. Let her know that the entire family wants her to remain at home too.

Then point out that the best way for her to stay at home is to accept help from you or others. Most seniors eventually will see the truth in your words. Discuss with your mother-in-law whether she would be more comfortable with a family caregiver or a professional caregiver who could provide her a few hours of assistance a week. Because your mother-in-law was in business for herself and is accustomed to employees, she might actually be better suited to having a professional caregiver. That would allow her to feel more in control of the situation.

How Spam Blocker Can Protect Your Enterprise - IdeaMarketers.com

Your business may have difficulties with spams or unwanted emails getting in your email. This issue might be solved by getting a spam blocker. This is often essential for your business' success as efficiency is not compromised.

There are times when you're overwhelmed with your email's inbox. You might be disappointed to find out that these unread emails are just unsolicited mail or irrelevant spam. This problem could be solved by using a anti-spam software. This could bring your efficiency back, as you can save your time from eliminating these unwanted files. It may also help you answer immediately to essential emails.

How spam might affect your enterprise?

Spam is a concern that business owners should not put aside. It threatens to obtain or interrupt the databases of sensitive files you keep. These data files can include your clients' details, transcript of deals, along with important documents trade which are vital for your business' success. Your company may be at risk if other individuals view these files. Your status, for instance, may be affected. There are spams that may track all your internet actions when clicked. The sensitive and confidential information they acquired can be used against your company. Others may benefit from knowing these, using it for their own purposes. Customers may be tricked or irritated because of their received junk mails with your business' address as the sender. You might also lose clients as you've failed in your responsibility to secure their personal information. This leakage of private information can result in identity fraud. Your user system and servers may also have troubles due to spamming. The efficiency of your staff might also suffer. Instead of doing the tasks assigned to them, they may be expected to identify and delete the unsolicited spam mails first. This could result to paying them the same salary even if 1 / 2 of the tasks they did was trashing spams. Another cause of these is slower connection to the internet. Web may be essential as most of your employees' tasks count on it. This may result again to lost efficiency. These spams, furthermore, only add to the many problems and responsibilities a company should be concentrating on. They might also allocate some of their profit for each spam sent.

How anti-spam software will help your business?

With the increasing variety of spam sent annually, together with threats to your business, it can be beneficial to have a anti-spam software. This may enable you to filter your company emails. Emails with viruses or harmful content may now be prevented from reaching your e-mail as these are blocked and deleted. It can explain suspicious communications and unwanted spams by figuring out the word patterns and frequency. You may not be irritated anymore as pop-up ads may also be blocked. Search on the internet about different firms that provide email filtering services and email security solutions like securence.com. A few of their services include outbound filtering, inbound filtering, email encryption, and email archiving services. You have to be equipped for avoiding more severe security problems. Being secured to spams can help your business to advance and get ahead.

Pac-12 using Twitter, Web to pressure DirecTV for a deal

Does Boy George want his Pac-12 Networks?

In the 1980s, the couch potato mantra was, ?I want my MTV.?

The Pacific-12 Conference now wants people to demand their Pac-12 Networks.

With college football starting this week, the conference is taking to Twitter and the Interwebs to pressure DirecTV to agree to carry the newly launched Pac-12 Networks.

Cal?s athletic director, Sandy Barbour, wrote on her Twitter account: ?What u say @DIRECTV R we going 2get this done or not? #IWantPac12Networks Don?t really want 2switch, but I?ll have2 if u don?t come through.?

The Pac-12, on its website, today posted an open letter to fans who are DirecTV subscribers. ?If you?re one of the fans who won?t be satisfied without Pac-12 football, or our more than 135 men?s basketball games and hundreds of other live events, we recommend finding Pac-12 Networks with another television provider.?

The Pac-12 Networks, which took to the air this month, has deals with 28 cable providers, including some of the biggest like Comcast Corp., Time Warner Inc. and Cox Communications Inc. Those deals cover wide swaths of the country. But the Pac-12 wants a deal with DirecTV, a major satellite provider, to gets its shows broadcast nationwide.

Pac-12 officials said they in talks with DirecTV and other satellite providers, but have not yet reached a deal. The sticking point, no doubt, is money. It is reported that Pac-12 Networks wants more than 80 cents per subscriber monthly.

How to Create a Budget With Your Spouse - Everything Finance

Throughout the past two and a half years of marriage, I?ve primarily managed the money in our household. Time and time again, I would try and get my husband involved but it just led to bouts of despair, heavy sighs and finally one of us walking away in frustration. It led me to wonder: How do you create a budget with your spouse and stay married?

For the past three to four months, we?ve actually been budgeting together, and it?s been working! We changed the way we handle the budget and this is what?s worked for us.

Start with a Clean Slate

We began a new approach to the way we budget. We swiped clean what we had been doing, since what we had been doing obviously wasn?t working. And we started fresh. We created a budget from scratch that suited both our needs and both our wants. Starting over meant we both got to have input into how our money is spent.

Patience

There were many times during our budgeting process that we would start to feel our temperatures rise and our cheeks flush. It was important to keep our emotions in check. It helped to plan our budget with a glass of wine to calm the nerves. And it also required a lot of understanding. A long-standing sore subject in our marriage is the amount of money he spends on food. I pack my lunch every day, whereas he is forced to pay for lunch and dinner every day per firehouse rules. It?s not his fault it?s a requirement. But it puts a big dent on our budget.

Allow Fun Money

We both came to the agreement of Fun or Free Money?money that can be spent any way we please and the other partner can?t say anything about it. If I want to go to happy hour with friends, I use my fun money. If Eric wants to spend his money on fast food even though we have perfectly good organic food at home, he?s free to do so and I can?t say anything about it?not one little thing. Obviously I?m not bitter about his choices, right? Of course.

Create Duties

We each have our own duties now when it comes to the budget. I budget the day to day in a notebook, and every week or two, we get together and my husband manages the monthly and yearly budget in our Excel Spreadsheet, making sure we?re on track. Having him in charge of the spreadsheet means he feels included in the process, rather than before when I would simply spew the numbers at him.

Remember your goals

We always like to set financial goals for ourselves. It helps us stay on track in those moments where we?re fed up of being frugal and really just want to splurge. Because of sacrifices we?ve made, we?ve been able to stick to a good portion of our financial goals, such as paying off credit card debt, contributing to our 401Ks, and paying off student loans.

?

Money is often cited as one of the number reasons for divorce. Don?t let finances ruin your relationship. Remember that you were both put on the same team to win. It?s not a contest or a his vs. hers. As they say, keep calm and carry on.
