Facebook passwords: why companies don?t use them to see your posts

Several states are considering laws to bar companies form asking for applicants? social media passwords. But the social-media world is easily mined even without passwords, experts say.?

From Connecticut to California, concern over a rise in employer demands for access to prospective employee?s social media logins and passwords is leading lawmakers to take action.

There is pending legislation in at least five states ? including Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Massachusetts ? and the Maryland legislature just passed its own version of a bill prohibiting the practice.

But as this groundswell grows, questions are rising about whether laws will actually stop employers from seeking out digital information in an increasingly digital age.

?There is a legitimate and growing concern about privacy on the Internet,? says Katharine Parker of Proskauer Employment Law Counseling & Training Group in New York, who advises employers on hiring practices and other HR issues. ?Is there any privacy on the Internet, should there be, and what laws are needed to regulate it are all questions that are just now being asked.?

Indeed, many experts say that companies do not need to ask for Facebook passwords to get information on applicants or employees. The notion that privacy settings make things on Facebook private ?is not necessarily accurate,? says Ms. Parker.

?Even if you have a lot of privacy settings on Facebook, it?s not private if you have lots of friends,? she says.

There are many ways to get information from applicants? social media without asking for their password, says Kabrina Krebel Chang, assistant professor of business law at Boston University?s School of Management.

?In many cases, the applicant is Facebook friends with someone already at the workplace,? she notes via e-mail.

There is nothing to stop that friend from showing others in the company the Facebook page. ?If there are no direct Facebook friends, many applicants are ?friends? of other pages or have liked other pages such as alma maters, interest groups, products, etc.,? Ms. Chang adds.

Human resources departments will simply switch to sending ?friend requests? to applicants and presenting this view of the individual during the interview process, says Charles Palmer, executive director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.

?It?s a little less overt and completely legal,? he says via e-mail, adding that he expects ?to see more investment into ?social forensics? to help weed out the applicant pool.?

The main thing for potential ? and current ? employees to remember is that any information that can be accessed on a computer is potentially going to be used in a hiring process, says Deborah Sweeny, CEO of MyCorporation.com.

Most people with time and the right knowledge and technology ?can access information that?s been posted online, even if it?s been posted to a social media profile that?s been made private,? she says via e-mail. Both employees and employers need to realize that anything they put online, could end up being public, she adds.

For these reasons, some experts think it is not only unnecessary but unwise for companies to ask for social media passwords.

?Once you ask for this kind of access, then you are on notice for anything that you might find,? says Todd Taylor, an attorney with Moore & Van Allen who specializes in communication technology. ?I would advise against going after information that isn?t already public for the simple reason that if you see something and you don?t act on it, you have the potential issue of a negligent hire down the road.?

Grass dismisses Israeli travel ban

BERLIN (AP) ? Guenter Grass says Israel's decision to bar him from visiting the country because of his poem criticizing the Jewish state reminds him of similar steps that dictatorial governments have taken against him.

Previously the German literature Nobel laureate has only been barred from entering a nation by then Communist-ruled East Germany and the military junta in Myanmar about 25 years ago, Grass said in a reaction piece published by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday.

Grass, 84, said the tone of Israel's announcement on Sunday reminded him of the reasoning then given by spy minister Erich Mielke of East Germany, or GDR.

"The GDR has ceased to exist. Israel's government, however, as a nuclear power of uncontrolled scope, considers itself powerful on its own and is so far not open for admonitions. In Myanmar alone, there are seeds of hope," he wrote, referring to the Southeast Asian nation's recent political thaw.

In his poem "What Must Be Said," published by Sueddeutsche Zeitung and other dailies across Europe on April 4, Grass criticized what he called Western hypocrisy over Israel's nuclear program and labeled the country a threat to "already fragile world peace" over its belligerent stance regarding Iran.

On Sunday, Israel's interior minister, Eli Yishai, announced that Grass ? who only late in his life admitted to a Nazi past ? would be barred from Israel, citing an Israeli law that allows it to prevent entry to ex-Nazis. But Yishai made clear the decision was related more to the recent poem than Grass' actions nearly 70 years ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply rejected Grass' poem, and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman accused Grass of anti-Semitism.

In his poem, Grass called for "unhindered and permanent control of Israel's nuclear capability and Iran's atomic facilities through an international body." Also, he specifically criticized Israel's "claim to the right of a first strike" against Iran.

Grass on Wednesday stressed that the travel ban won't hinder him from keeping the memories of his past trips to Israel alive. "I still see myself bound to Israel forever," he said.

In Israel, Grass' poem has touched a raw nerve, where officials have rejected any moral equivalence with Iran and been quick to note that Grass admitted only in a 2006 autobiography that he was drafted into the Waffen-SS Nazi paramilitary organization at age 17 in the final months of World War II.

Grass' subsequent clarification that his criticism was directed at Netanyahu's government, not the country as a whole, did little to calm the outcry.

Israel, along with much of the international community, believes that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon. The Israelis fear a nuclear Iran would threaten its existence, given repeated Iranian calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, and have threatened to attack Iran if diplomacy and sanctions fail.

Rarely mentioned in the debate ? except by Iran ? is that Israel itself is widely believed to possess its own undeclared arsenal of nuclear bombs.

Israel neither confirms nor denies having nuclear weapons and has refused to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which would subject it to international inspections.

U.S. sues Apple, publishers in e-book price scheme

WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. government sued Apple Inc and five publishers, saying they conspired to fix the prices of electronic books, and reached a settlement with three of the publishers that could lead to cheaper e-books for consumers.

The Justice Department accused Apple of colluding with the five publishers as the Silicon Valley giant was launching its iPad in early 2010 and was seeking to break up Amazon.com's low-cost dominance in the digital book market.

Because of the agreement, e-book prices went up an average of $2 to $3 in a three-day period in early 2010, according to the Justice Department lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday.

The settlement reached with three of the publishers will allow Amazon to resume discounting books, and will terminate the "most favoured nation" contracts with Apple.

Amazon said in response to the settlement that it plans to lower prices on books associated with its Kindle e-reader.

The pact also requires the publishers to wait two years before entering into any "agency model" agreements that prevent retailers from offering discounts on electronic books.

The publishers who agreed to settle are News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers Inc, CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc and Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group.

Hachette and HarperCollins also settled with a group of U.S. states, agreeing to pay $51 million (32 million pounds) in restitution to consumers who bought e-books.

Publishers Macmillan, a unit of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH, and Pearson Plc's Penguin Group, plan to fight the Justice Department charges, along with Apple.

James McQuivey, a media analyst at Forrester Research, said e-book prices were destined to come down, even without a Justice Department settlement, because publishers themselves have been experimenting with discounting to stimulate sales.

"It essentially will accelerate the reversion back to the sub-$10 prices that Amazon had already established as the standard," McQuivey said.

The e-book market has boomed in recent years. Sales grew from $78 million in sales in 2008 to $1.7 billion in 2011, according to Albert Greco, a book-industry expert at the business school of Fordham University.

A Pew Research Center survey released last week found that one in five American adults read an e-book in the last year.

SOME PUBLISHERS DEFIANT

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told a news conference in Washington that executives at the highest levels of Apple and the publishers worked together to eliminate competition among sellers of e-books.

During December 2009 and January 2010, the publisher defendants' U.S. chief executives placed at least 56 phone calls to one another, the complaint alleges.

"As a result of this alleged conspiracy, we believe that consumers paid millions of dollars more for some of the most popular titles," Holder said.

Apple had no comment about the federal lawsuit. A person familiar with the matter said Apple has not been part of the settlement negotiations.

In a recent court filing, in a private class action suit on the same issue, Apple said it had not colluded with the publishers but "individually negotiated separate vertical agreements with each of the publishers."

Macmillan Chief Executive John Sargent released a defiant letter to the book industry on Wednesday saying the publisher did not collude.

Sargent said Macmillan had been in discussions with the Justice Department for months, but the settlement terms were "too onerous".

"After careful consideration, we came to the conclusion that the terms could have allowed Amazon to recover the monopoly position it had been building before our switch to the agency model," Sargent said.

Hachette said in a statement that it reluctantly agreed to join the federal and state settlements, but it "was not involved in a conspiracy to illegally fix the price of eBooks."

Penguin CEO John Makinson said his company did nothing wrong and was alone among the publishers in not holding any settlement discussions.

HarperCollins, which also settled, denied any wrongdoing. Simon & Schuster declined to comment.

The European Commission is also probing Apple and publishers in a similar antitrust probe. It said on Wednesday that it had received settlement proposals from Apple and four publishers - Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, Hachette Livre and Macmillan's parent.

JOBS' ROLE

The U.S. government alleged that Apple and the publishers had a common interest in fighting Amazon's practice of selling e-books for as little as $9.99 as it was building market share and trying to drive sales of its Kindle reader.

Apple's late co-founder and technology legend Steve Jobs figures prominently in the Justice Department's lawsuit with many instances of his personal involvement in negotiations with publishing executives about deal terms.

"Throw in with Apple and see if we can all make a go of this to create a real mainstream e-books market at $12.99 and $14.99," Jobs wrote to one of the publishers, according to the Justice Department's complaint.

Apple successfully persuaded the publishers to adopt an "agency model" that allowed publishers to set the price of e-books and in turn, Apple would take a 30 percent cut, the government said. The Apple agreements with publishers effectively barred them from allowing rival retailers to sell the same books at lower prices.

The strategy upended the "wholesale model" in which retailers pay for the product and charge what they like.

The agency model of pricing is not itself illegal, but it is illegal for competitors to collude to set prices.

The Justice Department complaint charges that the publishers regularly communicated with each other about Amazon's e-book strategies and on ways to solve "the $9.99 problem".

Chief executives at rival publishing houses met regularly in private rooms at upscale Manhattan restaurants, the government alleged.

The complaint says the publishers took steps to conceal their communications with each other, including instructions to "double delete" email and other measures to erase a paper trail.

The government said the publishers then received assurances from both each other and Apple that they would move together to raise the retail prices of e-books.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a former Connecticut attorney general, said the Justice Department's action was particularly important because it involved a new and growing consumer market.

"If it were not a new kind of product, people would say it's a kind of garden variety violation of law," he said. "The idea that this innovation can be stifled is particularly troubling."

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. It is No. 12-cv-2826.

Rotoworld: Teams overpaid these free agents

The 2012 free agency period has slowed considerably since mid-March, giving us time to reflect fully upon signings that took place over the past three weeks. Looking ahead, Rotoworld draft analyst Josh Norris will soon begin cranking out weekly reports on offensive skill positions as the April 26-28 draft approaches. For now, let's take a look back at players whose recently signed contracts don?t match their on-the-field performance.

1. Vikings tight end John Carlson

Carlson's five-year, $25 million deal made him the NFL's 12th-highest paid tight end in terms of annual average. While his $9.1 million in guarantees were more reasonable and put Carlson a few notches lower in the league's tight end contract rankings, it's still quite a pricey sum for a guy who didn't play a down last year and lacked an impressive track record in previous seasons.

Carlson ran a 4.89 forty at the 2008 Scouting Combine and has struggled mightily as a blocker in the NFL. He has a history of concussions and tore a labrum in his shoulder last August. While Carlson will be 100 percent for OTAs, his first four seasons suggest Carlson stands little to no chance of meeting the expectations set forth by the money he's making. Especially once 2011 second-round pick Kyle Rudolph easily surpasses him as Minnesota's go-to option at tight end.

2. Buccaneers cornerback Eric Wright

Wright, who ranked 104th of 109 in Pro Football Focus' 2011 cornerback rankings, became the NFL's 16th-richest corner when he inked a five-year, $38 million deal on March 14. The contract includes $15.5 million in guarantees and locks in Wright through at least the 2014 offseason. Tampa Bay wasn't the only team hot for Wright's services, but they were clearly willing to pay the most despite two straight poor seasons. Wright was benched in Cleveland the previous year.

Wright is only 26 -- he turns 27 in July -- and talent has never been an issue. He appeared to be emerging as a top-ten NFL corner as recently as the 2009 season, when Wright picked off four passes as a 16-game starter for the Browns. The Bucs aren't paying Wright for 2011 and 2010. They're wagering he'll maximize his abilities in new coach Greg Schiano's scheme. It's an expensive gamble.

3. Browns defensive end Frostee Rucker

The 91st pick in the 2006 draft, Rucker's six-year Bengals tenure can be described as pedestrian at best. He's registered seven sacks in 53 games (19 starts) with a career high of four in 2011. Rucker is entering his age-29 campaign, and he could never have been mistaken for an explosive edge rusher. At the cost of $20.5 million over five years, the Browns expect him to be their new starting right end.

Rucker was arrested in college for spousal battery and vandalism, and was fined one game check in the NFL. He's ended a season on I.R. three times in six years, making it through 16 games once in his career. The Browns gave a $5 million signing bonus to a player with medical and character red flags who's been sparingly productive through six seasons. That's not very good business.

4. Jaguars wide receiver Laurent Robinson

Robinson's five-year, $32.5 million contract made him the league's 18th-highest paid receiver in annual average and 16th in guarantees per year. Robinson preyed on single coverage as the Dallas' third receiver last season while Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, and Miles Austin got the defensive attention. Prior to 2011, Robinson had never caught more than 37 balls or cleared 13 yards per catch across four years in the NFL. His previous career high in touchdowns was two.

GM Gene Smith would say otherwise, but the Jags seemed to operate with desperation in their Robinson pursuit. Dwayne Bowe, Wes Welker, and DeSean Jackson were all franchise tagged. Stevie Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Pierre Garcon, and Reggie Wayne had all already signed. The Jags never wanted Brandon Lloyd or Mario Manningham, so they set their sights on Robinson and overpaid. Hopefully, Blaine Gabbert can get him the ball.

The Jags never wanted Brandon Lloyd or Mario Manningham, so they set their sights on Robinson and overpaid. Hopefully, Blaine Gabbert can get him the ball.

5. Bills defensive end Mark Anderson

After re-signing Stevie Johnson, the Bills turned all of their attention to upgrading the front seven, and that aggressiveness was honorable. They made Mario Williams the highest paid defender in NFL history, and then followed it up by signing Anderson to be Mario's weak-side bookend. Buffalo had a plan, and it executed. But Anderson was overpaid in the process, and there are likely people in the Bills' organization who would acknowledge as much. He isn't worth $5 million a year.

Anderson is going on age 29. He's been in the league for six seasons, and in just two of them recorded more than five sacks. Anderson is consistently washed out in run defense and is essentially a one-down end. The Bills will give him a chance to be an every-snap player, but it almost certainly won't end well. While Buffalo's team sack total will rise in 2012, offenses will know exactly which front-four member to target on running plays: Mark Anderson.

6. Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon

Garcon became the NFL's ninth-highest paid receiver on March 13, when the Redskins handed him a five-year, $42.5 million blockbuster with $20.5M guaranteed. Seven of the eight players ahead of Garcon in the receiver-contract rankings have made the Pro Bowl (Santonio Holmes is the other outlier), and so have the three wideouts just behind Garcon in the top 12. In other words, Garcon has the contract of a decorated NFL receiver. He's just not a decorated NFL receiver.

Pro Bowl berths don't tell the whole story, of course, and the Skins are banking that Garcon has some in his future. He's only 25. Since Garcon cracked the starting lineup in 2009, however, he has been an inconsistent, inefficient receiver in whom Peyton Manning often showed distrust. Garcon's career-best 2011 campaign came during a year that saw Indy constantly play from behind. Continuing to lack consistency, Garcon racked up 421 of his 947 yards (44.5 percent) and all six of his TDs in three games. Two of them were against pass defenses that ranked in the NFL's bottom dozen. In the Colts' other 13 games, Garcon averaged under 41 yards per contest.

7. Rams center Scott Wells

Wells is a good football player, and the Rams need as many of them as they can get. But what is the value of an undersized, 31-year-old center? St. Louis deemed it to be $24M over four years with $13 million guaranteed, making Wells the league's fourth-richest center. (For the curious, Carolina's Ryan Kalil is No. 1, the Jets' Nick Mangold is No. 2, and Houston's Chris Myers is 3.)

The Rams certainly need line help, and a pocket that collapses from the interior is the quickest way to kill a passing game. In Green Bay, however, Wells was a player the Packers were annually trying to replace. And Pack GM Ted Thompson knows a thing or two about talent evaluation. Will Wells be a system fit? He's spent the past six seasons in Mike McCarthy's zone-blocking scheme.

8. Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne

"Wayne will finish his career a Colt." "Luck gets a veteran receiver." They're nice storylines, and they've both been trumpeted by a media that prefers fluff pieces to football film. What about last year, when Wayne rounded his routes and quit on assignments? Wayne is going on 34, and his playmaking ability is in swift decline. He hasn't cleared 13 yards per catch in four years, devolving into a late-career possession receiver. Press coverage with a safety over the top cancels him out of games.

The Colts wanted Pierre Garcon over Wayne, but settled for the latter when they were outbid for the former. Wayne stayed on for $17.5 million over three years, with a $7.5M signing bonus. Would anyone else have paid that much? The guess here is no. Wayne is a shell of his old self.

9. Cardinals offensive tackle Levi Brown

Brown has fallen well short of expectations accompanying the fifth pick in the 2007 draft, but re-signing him was a move the Cards felt they had to make. Tackle was the thinnest position in free agency, and Brown strung together the best half-season of his career down last year's stretch. Arizona won seven of its final nine games, due in no small part to improved pass protection.

After cutting Brown to avoid a $16.9 million cap number, the Cardinals took just three days to re-sign him for $30 million over five years. The contract made Brown only the 14th-highest paid left tackle in the game, but he shouldn't be a left tackle. Brown is a heavy-footed drive blocker, and his ideal position is on the right side. If the Cardinals draft a Riley Reiff or Jonathan Martin to protect their quarterback's back side, Brown would become the league's fourth highest paid right tackle.

10. Cowboys guard Mackenzy Bernadeau

Bernadeau couldn't crack the lineup for a Panthers team that got average to below-average guard play last season. The Cowboys paid him to be a starter. While Bernadeau's $11 million over four years and $3.25 million signing bonus aren't overwhelming, Dallas projected him as an upgrade perhaps only because Bernadeau is young with perceived potential. When the 26-year-old made 12 spot starts in 2010, Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the worst guards in the league.

Bernadeau has youth on his side and will be tutored by one of the best line coaches in football in Bill Callahan. But is he any good? Two coaching staffs in Carolina didn't think so. Ron Rivera's unit let Bernadeau ride the pine, and John Fox benched him in October of the previous year. The blind faith in Bernadeau may also steer Dallas away from Stanford's David DeCastro in the draft.

Semifinalists: Alex Smith (three years, $24 million), Red Bryant (five years, $35 million), DeSean Jackson (five years, $51 million), Nate Livings (five years, $19 million), Brodrick Bunkley (five years, $25 million), Ronde Barber (one year, $3 million).

Gardening in Canada

Updated: 03/23/11

Have you been thinking about going out in the garden and getting your hands dirty? Here are some useful resources to give you a bit of inspiration and some solid advice on planning your garden in Canada.

Gardening Zones

The first thing you need to know is the gardening hardiness zone for your geographic location in Canada, so you'll be able to find information that applies to your particular climate conditions. To make life a little more difficult, Canadian and U.S. zone numbers are not the same - so be sure you know whether you are at a Canadian or U.S. site when you are looking at zone information. Here are maps for both:

Planning Your Garden

Lee Valley Tools, a Canadian company which sells gardening and woodworking tools, has a lot of useful information on its site. As well as online shopping for an array of useful gardening tools and supplies, the company has articles to help plan your garden. As an example, in the "In the Garden" section of articles you'll find a Home Garden Schedule. It gives a month-by-month schedule of what things in the garden should be done when. Primarily for the northeast United States and central and eastern Canada, you might have to adjust it a bit for your own location, but it provides a useful overall perspective.

Garden Landscaping

A source of Canadian landscaping information is the In The Yard section of the I Can Garden site. You'll find items there on starting your garden, accessories, perennials, trees and shrubs, and lawns.

If you need general information on landscaping and garden design, you can find it here on the About.com network. The first site to check is About.com Landscaping with David Beaulieu, where you'll find an amazing selection of resources to help with your landscaping needs. Also be sure to check About.com Gardening with Marie Iannotti. Her section on garden design provides practical information plus some inspiration. Neither of the About.com sites is Canadian, but much of their information is useable in northern climates.

News! Old Town Athletic Club Forms Relay For Life Team? | Health ...

Warrenton, VA- Old Town Athletic Club (OTAC) formed a team for this year?s Relay For Life of Fauquier County on June 2nd at Kettle Run High School, and is asking you to join them.

OTAC Personal Trainer Travis Scarborough has participated in Relay For Life for several years?first as walkers, then as active team leaders. Three years ago, Travis?s wife, Jennifer, became the co-chair of the Fauquier Relay For Life. Their lives, like many of ours, have been directly affected by cancer.

?The first time I attended a Relay for Life, I was amazed at the size of the event. There were over a thousand people there. Everyone there has been affected by the disease or knows someone who has. By participating in Relay, we are refusing to sit by and we are choosing to join in the fight against cancer. We can help and support those with it, we can contribute to the scientific fight against it, and we can educate ourselves and others about it,? Travis explains.

In the past, Old Town Athletic Club and its members have supported Relay teams through various activities such as the ?Womanless Beauty Contest? and bake sales in the lobby of the club.

This year, Old Town Athletic Club formed its own team. The team is a part of OTAC?s ongoing mission to promote holistic health and fitness in the Club?and in the community.

At the event, the OTAC team will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

?The team is also here to show our support and love to our members who are currently fighting cancer. It also represents our members who are cancer survivors and those members who are caring for loved ones with cancer. Finally the team is here to honor the memories of those members we have lost to the disease,? Travis expresses on behalf of the team.

The team is open to all OTAC members, staff and friends and family of OTAC members. You can join the team or make a donation online at:

http://main.acsevents.org/goto/OldTownAthleticClub

If you are looking for a special fitness challenge as part of the team, you can sign up to be a ?12 hour Walker? for the Relay For Life event. These participants will walk the Kettle Run track for the entire 12 hours of the Relay. Please indicate it when you sign up for the team if you would like to be a ?12 hour walker.?

Solar Steam Helps Coax Heavy Oil from Old Fields

solar-steamSOLAR STEAM: Chevron is using concentrating solar power to create steam to help melt remaining heavier oils and coax them to the surface in California. Image: Courtesy of Chevron

The Coalinga oil field in California has been pumping out crude since 1887, and the remaining oil has gotten heavier and heavier and harder and harder to extract?but it will soon get a boost from the sun. Specifically, the old field will use steam generated by concentrated sunlight to help melt the remaining heavy oils and make them liquid enough to be pumped to the surface.

"It's operating and providing the bulk of the steam generated to support enhanced oil recovery," explains Jerry Lomax, vice president of emerging energy at Chevron, the energy company that funded the project. The idea is to "turn photons into solar steam and then? get that into an oil field injector."

Chevron partnered with BrightSource Energy, a company that designs and builds concentrating solar power plants, to build a version of that technology in the Coalinga oil field. They have built more than 7,000 mirrors on mechanized devices?known as heliostats?to track the sun on 65 acres and concentrate sunlight from this broad area to a point atop a 327-foot-tall tower. Inside that tower, water turns to steam at a pressure of 700 pounds per square inch and an average temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit. That steam flows to a heat exchanger, where it turns water from the oil field to steam so that it can be pumped back underground to loosen the remaining oil. All told, the power tower system pumps out 350 barrels of steam an hour, which will be used to supplement water boiled to steam by burning natural gas if testing goes well.

"It's an extra 5 percent for them," Lomax says, "and they save that much natural gas." As it stands, Chevron pumps nearly 8,000 barrels of "oil equivalent" per day out of the Coalinga field.

Over the course of 2012, Chevron will determine how reliable the solar steam is, as well as what kind of steam volumes it can expect under various conditions. By next year, once hookups are in place, the solar steam will start supplementing that from burning natural gas. "Solar steam will always be an augmentation of an alternate traditional fuel source, such as natural gas, so we have 24-hour coverage," Lomax says. On the sunniest days, the system can produce steam almost 12 hours of the day, but Chevron will investigate whether it is feasible to run an oil field exclusively on solar steam as part of this demonstration project.

Heavy oils are a big part of new oil being produced around the world, whether oil from the tar sands of Canada or thicker crude from Indonesia. Chevron has brought up 150,000 barrels of bitumen in California alone and roughly 500,000 barrels per day around the world. Solar steam?should it prove successful in California's San Joaquin Valley?might make sense to get more oil out of the ground in places like the partition zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait or Indonesia. "All three locations have sites with ample sunlight and ample amounts of flat acreage near oil fields where you could include a solar field of this scale," Lomax says, and the company is also studying whether solar steam might make sense for complexes that refine oil or produce petrochemicals, both of which employ a lot of heat.

Of course, oil fields are not the friendliest or cleanest places for mirrors that must remain highly polished to be effective. Thus far, the oil company has only broken one of the heliostats by running into it with machinery and has been pitting human crews against automated cleaning machines. "The machine uses slightly less water than a manual crew," Lomax says.

Shake It Out! 250 Rep Workout | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

Bend the knees, and lower into a squat, keeping the knees behind the toes. Imagine that you?re sticking your butt out behind you, but keep the torso upright and contracted.Press into the heels to stand up.Lunges are a challenging exercise because they work so many muscles at the same time. On the front leg, you?ll work the glutes and hamstrings and, on the back leg, you?ll work the quads and calves.?Step ups are another great exercise for the glutes. For step ups, place one foot on a step or platform and push through the heel to lift the body up. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes, providing you use a step that?s high enough, although you may need to work up to a higher step if you?re a beginner. You eventually want a height were your knee is at about a 90-degree angle.
