County amateur golf tournament changing courses

A different course will help determine Gaston County?s top amateur golfer this year.

Crowder?s Mountain Golf Club will be the new site of the Gaston County Amateur?s first and second rounds while the third and final round will again be held at Gaston Country Club. The first and second rounds were previously held at the former Gastonia Municipal, now named Catawba Creek.

Crowder?s Mountain is just southwest of Gastonia near the intersection of I-85 and U.S. 74.

The 39th annual tournament is scheduled for Sept. 14 through Sept. 16. The field is limited to the first 96 paid entries ? 72 in the amateur division and 24 in the senior division (ages 55 and older). The tournament will again feature a super senior division for golfers ages 65 and older.

After the first two rounds, the top 30 players in the amateur division and top nine in the senior division will advance to the final round at Gaston Country Club. The super senior champion will be determined after the first two rounds.

Entry fee is $100. Entries must reach Cancer Services of Gaston County at 306 S. Columbia St. in Gastonia by Sept. 11 at noon. For more information, call Cancer Services of Gaston County at 704-864-1271 or tournament chairman Pat Morrow at 704-864-9678.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit Cancer Services of Gaston County. The 2011 tournament raised more than $29,000. The mission of Cancer Services is to serve the community by actively promoting healthy lifestyles and to provide support and services to people living with cancer.

Todd Stafford of Belmont won his third championship last year with a three-round score of 4-under.
