PSI Research & Metrics (R&M) is seeking two or three technical writer-editors (consultants) for its roster. Selected writer-editors will work closely with R&M staff and/or the staff of technical or other departments (both Washington- and field-based) on an as-needed basis to communicate about PSI?s R&M tools, resources and study results to a wide variety of internal and external audiences, such as non-technical PSI staff, the international public health community, donors and partner organizations and media. He/she will be called on to write, edit and/or proofread online, print and other communications. Projects may range from proofreading two-page briefs to writing articles or reports. Strong candidates will be able to write in the technical voice of applied health research, as well as in more journalistic styles to reach non-technical audiences. They will also have demonstrated success in writing and editing fluid, clear, precise, and correct prose. Strong proofreading skills are essential as well as an ability to take others? work and translate it into text that reaches the above audiences. Aptitude for adapting to and appreciating cultural differences and language barriers inherent in a diverse international organization is essential. Experience in web-based writing formats is a distinct advantage.

  • Work may include:
  • Preparing research briefs, learning materials and presentations for improving the understanding of R&M tools and study results internally and externally
  • Serving as a ghost writer on working papers and papers for external dissemination
  • Developing and maintaining content for the PSI website
  • Preparing and/or refining conference and meeting presentations for technically specialized or lay audiences
  • Working closely with the R&M team and/or the staff of technical or other departments to produce written outputs that raise the profile of R&M in the public health community and with the public at large
  • Working closely with R&M staff in Washington, DC or researchers based in the field to improve written communications

Experience:

  • MA (or BA with extensive experience) in English, communications, journalism, public health or related
  • At least two years of professional experience with primary responsibility for writing, editing, and producing publications and communications materials (web content, annual reports, newsletters, electronic newsletters, brochures, etc.) for a variety of audiences
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to take complex topics and distill them into material appropriate for many different audiences
  • Highly organized, comfortable working on multiple simultaneous projects; deadline-driven
  • Strong desktop publishing skills, including MS Office applications, a plus
  • Experience working in a public health-related field a strong advantage
  • International experience or experience working for an international organization a plus
  • Located in or near Washington, DC a plus
  • Web design skills a plus
  • Knowledge of French, Spanish, or Portuguese a strong advantage

  • Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in low- and middle-income countries, knowledge of public health issues and social marketing, ability to speak/write French, Spanish, or Portuguese, and/or familiarity with the international donor development community.
