US seeks talks with India over poultry imports ban

The United States said Tuesday it was seeking talks with India over its five-year-old ban on imports of US chicken meat and eggs on what Washington called "unjustified" health-safety worries.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said the United States was seeking consultations under World Trade Organization rules over the ban.

In a statement his office said that India had justified the ban as necessary to prevent the spread of avian influenza, or "bird flu," "but it has not provided scientific evidence in line with international standards on avian-influenza control."

"India's ban on US poultry is clearly a case of disguising trade restrictions by invoking unjustified animal health concerns," Kirk said in the statement.

"The United States is the world's leader in agricultural safety and we are confident that the WTO will confirm that India's ban is unjustified."

Kirk's office said that if the dispute is not resolved through consultations, Washington could take the issue to the WTO for resolution.

The world's second-largest exporter of poultry products after Brazil, the United States is also battling with China over its steep anti-dumping duties on imported US frozen chicken meat.

The US exported about $5.1 billion worth of poultry products, including eggs, last year.
